August Book of the Month:

The Whitewash

by Siang Lu

I fell in love with this book from the first page. Set in an mock interview style (think Daisy Jones and the Six), except with a biting and mocking witticism about society, with a history of kung fu movies (truly something I NEVER knew I would care about); this book had me laughing out loud. Interspersed with fun facts about Hollywood, this book was the complete antithesis of everything I originally thought it was going to be, and I immediately passed it along to my best friend. Complete with a full cast including the mobster, the jock stunt double, the snooping paparazzi and the triad family members. But most importantly, it was a book where I could read out parts to my partner as I practiced my Cantonese and he proceeded to mock my terrible pronunciation, while being really confused about why his childhood movies were featured in a book. Which is a truly incredible feat.

August ILF Book of the Month:

Mulganai: A First Nations Colouring Book

by Emma Hollingsworth

This colouring book is the perfect way to relax and unwind, filled with pages of gorgeous artwork to colour in. Each page reflects Hollingsworth’s (Mulganai) heritage and experience as a First Nations woman, both in the art and the text. The artwork to be coloured in uses the symbols that are important to Hollingsworth - both traditional and contemporary as well as personally and culturally. Each colouring page, or set of pages, comes with an insightful explanation of what is being depicted and its significance. This book is not just for colouring in, but also for exploring the stories and imagery central to Hollingsworth and her community.
