OverviewIn the 21st century, phenomena such as populism, digitalisation and globalisation pose new challenges for criminal law. A growing need for security in the face of diverse fears, an increased sensitivity to sexual assaults, and the emergence of new forms of fraudulent behaviour have led to the enactment of a large number of new criminal laws, both in Germany and abroad. An end of the expansion of criminal law is not in sight. At the same time, changes in criminal procedure law have led to a reduction of the protection of individual rights and to an emphasis on quick, administrative dispositions. In this volume, which commemorates the 70th birthday of criminal law professor Thomas Weigend (University of Cologne), internationally leading scholars from Germany, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and the United States critically analyse these developments from dogmatic, comparative and criminological perspectives.
