Overview

"First came the paintings. Paintings of a ""land of two blue suns and two violet moons, all shining at the same time"". Out of them grew the words, one after the other, lined themselves up, and became a story. Thus was born the book 'Zhito and the Little Princess', which, in its somewhat winding way, tells the tale of that marvelous land, where ""One day a terrible plague broke out""; of 'Zhito', who was a ""creature, shining in many colors"" and had a ""deep, soft voice""; of 'Witch X'; and of 'The Little Princess'- the author- who was an infant during the Holocaust, and Zhito helped to save. This is a story of children who lose, and find, and dream, and do not cry, and search for a road of their own."

Author Information

I came into this world in the middle of World War 2, in the year 1942. When I was about three months old, my parents and I were put on a train to Aushcwitz. My parents succeeded to ascape, I don't know how, and we went underground. Two years began of running from one hidding place to another, of deficiency, illnes and anxiety, until we could run no more. The circle of persecution has closed in on us. I was delivered to a Baptist family, the family Gubbitch, by my uncle Tzvi, who was watching over me from afar all that time. There I lived untill the end of the war, when my parents returned from the concentration camps, and took me back. In the year 1949 we emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Israel. As I was so very young, I naturally don't have concrete, conscious memories of that period. The story `Zhito and the Litle Princess` tells in a metaphoric, legend-like way, what I have been through during that time, and serves as a monument to those who were there with me. Sarka Sappan
