Drafted into the army at age 18, he served as an infantryman in General Patton's 3rd Army. Surviving the battles of Lorraine, the Ardennes and the Battle of the Bulge, he was awarded the Bronze and Silver Stars for heroism. Returning from duty, he attended the University of Maine and Worcester Poly Tech and went on to teach Physics at the Massachusetts State College in Fitchburg, MA. After retiring, he and his wife spent summers in France. In 2011 the French government bestowed it's highest civilian honor on him, the Legion of Honor for his WWII service.
