OverviewA soldier's story of WW II in the Phillipines Your Friends and Neighbors is the World War II story of Private First Class (PFe William E. Ernst from the day he was drafted to the day he returned home from the war. PFC Ernst entered the war in the Pacific where he joined the 32nd Infantry Division and was immediately assigned to the front. Nicknamed the Red Arrow Division, the 32nd learned some tough lessons during the Army's first exposure to jungle fighting at the Battle of Buna on the island of New Guinea. They soon applied their lessons learned in battles at Saidor, Aitape, Driniumor River, Morotai, Leyte, and Luzon killing over 34,000 enemy troops. PFC Ernst joined the Division at Aitape where they battled 47,000 Japanese troops for 125 days. He was later transfered to the military police and went on to the occupation of Japan. He was awarded a Presidential Citation and Bronze Star among his many honors. His story is one of understated bravery and commitment that few people ever experience.
