Overview"Jack McKeown was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He was the oldest child of John and Esther McGowan McKeown. After enlisting, Jack was sent to build the new port of embarkation at Camp Upton on Long Island (near the town of Yaphank, NY). After six months at Upton, the Seventy-Seventh Division 306th Machine Gun Battalion Co. D. was shipped to France. Jack was soon promoted to 2nd Lieutenant Supply and Transportation Officer with the 305th Machine Gun Battalion Co. A. The 77th Division fought in the Argonne Forest which the Germans had seized early in the war. The 77th Infantry Division was the first ""National Army"" division created through the draft. It was the first American division of draftees to land in France. No other American division was closer to the German front than the 77th Division."
