Reviews

'Few museums have collections of the richness and diversity of those in Birmingham.' So starts the description of this book - blithely ignoring the claims of numerous other museums and galleries with infinitely richer and more diverse collections! This volume is the latest in a developing trend in art books: the publication of glossy catalogues of the holdings of various museums, the precise purpose of which - other than to serve a market among their visitors is unclear. Very few museums in the world have collections which are rich and diverse enough to provide a cross-section of the full range of art history, across the centuries and across the globe. Simply by concentrating on the treasures of one collection, such books are inevitably restricted. Unless they contain a single representative masterpiece of all the great periods of art history, with examples from numerous countries and different styles, they cannot pretend to be more than a 'celebration' of the particular museum. Ranging from pre-Columbian American textiles to Pop Art, from ancietnEgyptian sculpture to a British computer montage, this book offers little beyond insights into the acquisitions of Birmingham museums and art galleries.
