Court's story of Percy the horse and his friend Peter the cat is a superb piece of fiction, thrillingly imagined and beautifully written. That it is set in the Great War makes it even more dramatic. That it starts and ends at Blagdon in Northumberland is a particular treat for me. But surely the most remarkable thing about this charming book is that it is based on a true story, of a cat that went to war in 1914 with the Northumberland Hussars as their lucky mascot, bundled through a train window on the way to the boat, living on an ammunition cart and returning to Northumberland to die of natural causes at Meldon; and of a chestnut stallion, Percy, who lived through the war with the Hussars and somehow made it back to England afterwards to be reunited with the officer who first took him to the front. This is historical fiction, for all ages, at its best. Matt Ridley, Blagdon Hall At times amusing and often tear jerking. It leaves you with a warm glow at the end. Richard M. Tolson, Historian.
