Fans of Lee Child's crisp style of writing will welcome this mission for maverick hero Jack Reacher. A brutal assassin team has the Vice-President of the United States in their sights and the Secret Service, worried that it could be an inside job, need an outsider to track them down. Reacher has to navigate between FBI, the police and the Secret Service, all of whom are desperate to show that the rogue agents could not be theirs. Most desperate is Froelich, whose job it is to protect the Vice-President and who was once the lover of Jack's dead brother Joe, another Secret Service agent. Neagley, one of Reacher's former colleagues, joins him in this race against time. Jack Reacher is an interesting man to follow: physically strong, technically excellent, logical and with instincts honed through experience, he is unexpectedly kind and compassionate. Froelich is needy and still in love with Joe, and her developing relationship with Jack adds to the drama. This thriller would transfer well to the big screen and Child's skill is such that his readers can enjoy both the atmosphere of a cinematic drama and a considered insight into some complex and sympathetic characters.
