OverviewJohn Holland Rose (1855-1942) was an influential English historian who wrote a famous biography of French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, entitled The Life of Napoleon I (1901/02/03/07) (2 volumes) and also wrote a history of Europe, entitled The Development of the European Nations (1912/16). Rose was the basis for C. P. Snow's fictional character M. H. L. Gay. Amongst his other works are: The Rise of Democracy (1897), Life of William Pitt (1911) (2 volumes) and William Pitt and the Great War (1911).
