OverviewThe name of William Dean will be known to all followers of the Great Western Railway. But in reality how much is actually known of the man and the contribution he made to the legacy of the GWR? Probably precious little. So far as the history of GWR steam is concerned it is Churchward who holds the accolade, but is that really deserved? In this new book, the first to look solely at William Dean, Churchward's predecessor, GWR expert Jeremy Clements has unearthed much to indicate that the Churchward legacy was in fact based on William Dean's ideals and with it a concept that would hold good through the use of Dean's locomotives in WW1 and even through to BR when a Dean locomotive was proven to be more efficient than the latest BR product.
