Overview

"You are about to enter the often-perilous world of a young female professional wildlife photographer who stalks bears, wolves, mountain lions, wild horses, moose, bald eagles, buffalos and other elusive wildlife in their native habitat. Wild Among Us will allow you to experience harrowing encounters and adventures in the comfort of your living room. This book is unique in that it captures the aesthetic beauty of a fine art photo book and combines it with the true adventure stories of an intrepid photographer. ""Wild Among Us"" is accessible, engaging, humorous and down-to earth. The stunning wildlife photos and the vivid observations of animal behavior make for an exciting book that will grab the attention of your house guests. The book stands in tribute to the author's skills and perspective and to the wildlife with which we share the North American continent. Excerpt from ""Wild Among Us"": ""As I walked slowly along the trail with my friend, my heart pounded in my chest, and my body sweated profusely. I wanted to run, but I knew I couldn't and shouldn't. We were being stalked by a large grizzly bear and her cub. It started when I had walked to the beach front at Kaknek Lake in Alaska; I surprised a grizzly bear and her cub. When she saw me, she growled. I backed away slowly, my head hunched over to convey to the mother bear that I wasn't a threat to her or her cub. After what seemed like an eternity, I finally made my way back to the trailhead and Sandy. We proceeded to walk to the campground. As we proceeded slowly, step by step, I could see the unhappy bear in the corner of my eye staring at us the whole time. This ""stalk and walk"" process seemed to go on forever."" I thought, ""My place in the Alaskan food chain is crystal clear."" - Pat Toth-Smith, professional wildlife photographer"

While reading the book, I was part amused, part proud, by the author's candid talk about her fears, everything from running into wild animals to meeting strangers. It really says a lot about her determination and love of her job that she would continue to face those fears on a daily basis. It's a motivation for us all that we can face our fears to do what we love. Suzanne Gattis, Pacific Book Review For most of us who lack Pat Toth-Smith's brilliant photographic talents, dedication, and daring, we must content ourselves with hiking in parks such as Yellowstone and rafting down the Colorado River. Fortunately, we can pick up a book called Wild Among Us from the coffee table, and we can experience vicariously more extreme wildlife adventures. Toth-Smith has done all the gritty, perilous work for us. Her eyes and honed instincts have sought out and registered indelible scenes of nature and transferred them into compelling photographs and backstories. Author Information

"ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Pat Toth-Smith has an established reputation as a wildlife photographer with more than twenty years of professional experience. She is a leading master wildlife photographer whose bear and other wildlife photographs have sold in numerous markets, prestigious galleries and hundreds of fine art shows. A past featured artist in Wildlife Art magazine, she was a guest artist at the Ahwahnee Hotel Gallery in Yosemite National Park. Her work has been sold in Sequoia, Yosemite, and Kings Canyon National Parks. The concept for the book Wild Among Us, came out of Pats years of selling her fine art images in the West, primarily in California, Colorado, Nevada and Wyoming, and engaging her customer's reactions to her photographs and their accompanying stories. Her frightening wildlife encounters seem to amaze and enthrall her customers, and as a result many of her customers became collectors of her work. Pat became an award winning author when Wild Among Us: true adventures of a female photographer who stalks bears, wolves, mountain lions and other elusive wildlife won USA's best book award, a gold medal in the Living Now Awards and a bronze medal in the a e-Lit awards. In the summer of 2015, Pat was a guest on over 25 radio stations, including many NPR stations around the USA promoting her award winning book. In 2019, Pat appeared on Darlene Carmen Presents' Show to discuss her book and soon to be ""new titles."" Pat Toth-Smith grew up in New Jersey and moved to California in her late 20's and embarked on an adventurous and sometimes dangerous career photographing hard to find North American wildlife such as bears, wolves, cougars and other wildlife. Pat's statement, ""I have always felt it was worse to never do something because I was afraid to do it, then to do it and fail. So I pushed myself to do what I love, My photographs and stories are meant to help reestablish a connection with nature/wildlife and maybe inspire others to get out into the wilderness more often. When photographing, I try to capture the animal's expressions with a bit of reverence and humor. Frequently, I am drawn to the overall aesthetic of a wildlife scene, not just the drama that may be occurring at its center. My focus is less about getting the action shot and more about making the wildlife feel comfortable in my presence. I try to convey the connection of the wildlife to its environment."" Besides her continued success as a wildlife photographer/author she has become a featured guest speaker at conferences and educational events promoting ""facing your fear""."
