Overview

So the only question is- do animals other than man suffer? One of the great moral philosophers of the modern age, Peter Singer asks unflinching questions about how we should live our lives. The ideas collected in these writings, arguing that human tyranny over animals is a wrong comparable to racism and sexism, triggered the animal rights movement and gave impetus to the rise in vegan eating. GREAT IDEAS. Throughout history, some books have changed the world. They have transformed the way we see ourselves - and each other. They have inspired debate, dissent, war and revolution. They have enlightened, outraged, provoked and comforted. They have enriched lives - and destroyed them. Now Penguin brings you the works of the great thinkers, pioneers, radicals and visionaries whose ideas shook civilization and helped make us who we are.

Reviews

The argument is short, simple, and irrefutable; the supporting detail - what is done to animals in the course of turning them into food for human beings - is profoundly upsetting. Whoever is not persuaded by these essays of Peter Singer's does not have ears to hear. -- J. M. Coetzee
