Reviews

"As pollinators, seed spreaders, and insect eaters, bats quickly prove their worth in this Nature We Need series (6 titles) entry. The first two chapters provide a general overview of these flying mammals, touching on their variety (more than 1,400 kinds!), diets, homes, habits (nocturnal nature, hibernation, etc.), and ""superpowers"" (flight and echolocation). The remaining three chapters cover all the good bats do, the threats they face, and what life would look like without them. The book sports a simple, clean design with the average page containing one to two short paragraphs of text and a crisp, corresponding photo (typically of a bat). Bolded words are defined in a glossary, and a page of ""Cool Facts about Bats"" wraps up the main text. A nice companion series to Lily Williams' If Animals Disappeared books.--Julia Smith ""Booklist"""
