Overview

An autobiographical narrative that follows a young but seasoned veteran from his last mission in Iraq to his return and readjustment to life outside of combat. It explores the inner psyche of the modern veteran from the perspective of a jaded young man caught between his pride of service and the moral dilemma of fighting an unjust war. He battles PTSD and alcoholism until he finds peace in the company of a young progressive local poet.

Reviews

It takes a soldier to write this convincingly about the world of Humvees and IED's and danger behind every corner, but it takes a gifted prose writer to do so with the level of grace and power Joseph Holsworth achieves in What Deepest Remains. This is a deeply honest, fierce, compassionate, and often darkly funny first novel that places Holsworth on the map with Phil Klay and Anthony Swofford. Tom Barbash, award winning author of The Dakota Winters
