Overview

In 1973, American prisoners of war (POWs) were released from the terrible prisons of North Vietnam. How did the men survive the years of solitary confinement and the brutal torture that was all too common? After their return through the U.S. military's Operation Homecoming, the POWs shared their individual stories in letters to the American people. These letters shed light on their faith in God and love of family and country as well as their commitment to America and its freedoms. They also tell of their unique communication system and their unshakable sense of humor, which was critical to their survival. With gut-wrenching honesty and raw emotion, the POWs even describe the horrors of their encounters with the cruel guards. These men returned home with honor; they are our heroes. The compiler of this book, who is ninety-one years old, pulled together this patriotic project as a labor of love for future generations so they will know of the sacrifices these POWs were willing to make for this great country. With introductory letters from Bob Hope and Ronald Reagan, the 50th anniversary edition of We Came Home, including updates from the first 1977 edition, is a must-read for every American.

Perhaps this book will not only help those who will never be forgotten but will reach those who simply don't know or were too involved with trivial matters to realize what we now know-to be grateful for what we have, for we have so much. We have our freedom-all of us Americans! - Vietnam POW John A. Deering, USMC I hope that everyone who purchases this book will place it in a position in their home or office where it will be noticed periodically. Not as a reminder of us but rather of those who lost their lives in this conflict. May those who paid the supreme sacrifice never be forgotten, and I also hope that you are constantly reminded of the unswerving dedication of our enemy to do anything necessary to eventually destroy everything we hold so dear. - Vietnam POW Paul Anthony Kari, USAF To the buyers of this book, I express my thanks for supporting what I believe is a very good cause. - Vietnam POW Thomas V. Parrott, USAF I am sure this book will be interesting to the millions of Americans who steadfastly supported their country and us during our long involvement in Vietnam. - Vietnam POW Richard E. Smith, Jr., USAF If you're looking for inspiration in the face of tremendous adversity, look no further. These first-hand POW accounts from the Vietnam Conflict will bolster your faith and patriotism in America and its freedoms. - Dr. Darrell Smith, USAF (Ret.), former Commander American Legion State Department Post 68, Washington D.C. These heroes served with valor and distinction in circumstances that are beyond the comprehension of all but a few. This book should make you proud to be an American, and inspire you to serve your family, your community, and your country with renewed vigor. God Bless America! - LTC (Ret) Daniel M. Gade, PhD, Author of Wounding Warriors: How Bad Policy is Making Veterans Sicker and Poorer We Came Home honors the Vietnam Veterans and their families who gave so much for our country. No amount of gratitude can be expressed to thank our U.S. Prisoners of War for sharing their hardship and pain to the public. This book is a must have in your library to keep our heroes' memories alive and remember their sacrifices. - Manuel Sam Wong, LTC, US & Veterans of Foreign Wars John Lyon Post 3150 Commander, Arlington, VA This is a story about faith in God, love of family and country, and an unswerving loyalty to the American idea of freedom. A must read for every American generation. - LTG Theodore C. Nicholas II, USA (Ret.) Americans young and old will be inspired by the strength of spirit and physical courage documented in hard-hitting and extremely personal letters written by hundreds of our Vietnam War POWs. Despite solitude and torture, they never gave up and were sustained by their faith, their mental toughness and the enduring support of their fellow POWs. These ordinary men served our Nation during a difficult time with extraordinary heroism, and their gutsy American spirit will strengthen all who read their stories. - RADM Chuck Kubic, CEC, USN (Ret.)

Author Information

Barbara Powers Wyatt was born in Salem, New Jersey, where she attended Salem public schools. In 1953, she graduated from Clarke Conservatory of Music and went on to teach music in her hometown. Two years later, in pursuit of something bigger than small town life, she began a new profession as an airline stewardess with Trans World Airlines (TWA). After just three months, she met her future husband, Captain Frederic Wyatt, USNR, and together they built a family that included three sons. They would also work together in executive search, in politics, and with the military, all while teaching throughout Los Angeles County. In 1980, she served as part of the Reagan Administration for both of his terms. In one of their many endeavors together, she and her husband created and compiled the book We Came Home: POWs of Vietnam. To honor the POWs, she has updated their stories for the 50th anniversary of their homecoming. She currently lives in Las Vegas where she spends time writing and enjoying time with her family.
