Reviews

Water Sight evokes the Middle Ages in an imaginative and captivating way, leading the reader across medieval Wales in the midst of one of the most turbulent moments in its history. Marie Powell weaves history and myth together to create a story sure to ignite the hearts of modern readers. (Daniele Cybulskie, Author, Life in Medieval Europe) Marie Powell ups the excitement and the complexity in this exhilarating sequel to Spirit Sight. While Cat and her betrothed, Lord Rhys, match wits against the English invaders to hide the sacred relics, Hyw continues to guard the spirit of the slain prince of Wales even as he seeks his own path to peace in their uncertain future. Powell's soaring prose and depth of insight carry her characters through new heights of conflict, challenge and compassion in this tale that is at once heart-rending and heart-warming. A terrific read. (Sharon Plumb, Author, Kraamlok) This novel is so much more than the long-awaited sequel to Spirit Sight. In Water Sight, Marie Powell captures the desperate plight of embattled 13th century Wales as siblings Hwy and Cat plumb deep within their gifts to preserve those whom they love and their way of life against an implacable, genocidal enemy. Young fans of super heroes need look no further for protagonists worth emulating. (Maureen Ulrich, Author, #JessieMacHockeySeries) In Water Sight, we follow Hwy's sister Catrin, whose gift is to see the future in a drop of water. I actually enjoyed this book even more than the first, possibly because I was already familiar with the cast of the story. As she did so skillfully in Spirit Sight, Ms. Powell has managed to strike the perfect balance between action, fantasy, rich characterization, and historical detail. I can highly recommend this story to fans of historical fantasy. (Leslie Wibberley, Award-winning Author)

An amazingly written, emotionally driven, and fantasy-fueled read, author Marie Powell's second entry into the Last of the Gifted series, Water Sight , is a must-read for fans of the historical fiction/fantasy genres ...The emotional core of the story is Cat's struggle to not only save her people but protect her brother and the man she loves all at the same time while helping to fight off the English invaders ... As a history buff, it was incredible to learn more about the era before Wales officially became part of England, when revolts were fought to maintain their independence and kingdom. The fantasy elements feel natural as the story progresses, as each hero's power leads to difficult choices that many readers will be able to identify with. Rating: 10/10. (Leslie Wibberley, Award-winning Author) With memorable characters who have intriguing magical gifts, this adventure sweeps the reader through the craggy landscape and castles of Wales in the 1200s. Powell is a masterful storyteller. An evocative epic laced with myth and fact... Powerful phrasing, sensory descriptions, and mythical references abound... This is a series for young adults and I recommend it to teachers and librarians. The characters face contemporary struggles in a historic setting. The mingling of myth, magic, and adventure will appeal to middle grade and high school students, but also their parents. The Last of the Gifted is a classic. Wendy Hawkin, Ottawa Review of Books Continuing her established eloquent writing style, weaving history with romance and fantasy... The author's choice to explore the history of Wales is also an added benefit to the library of medieval history... Designating the novel as a Young Adult book most assuredly should not deter readers beyond that range of age: this is a solid novel worthy of the attention of a very broad audience. Marie Powell once again proves she is a new voice worthy of note. Highly recommended.
