Author Information

John was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1950, the Chinese year of the metal tiger. Educated at Scotch College, he excelled in mathematics, chemistry, and Russian. Before finishing school, he hitchhiked around Australia twice, worked as a miner and on offshore oil rigs, and accompanied his father, Weary Dunlop, to war-torn Vietnam in 1965.After graduating in mining engineering from Melbourne University, he spent 20 years in mine operations, moving into senior management and corporate roles. This was followed by 30 years as a freelance minerals consultant, often working in remote locations worldwide.Throughout his life, John pursued his passion for the outdoors, documenting his adventures in extensive written records spanning over 60 years. These include boyhood travels, mountain expeditions (this book), Tasmanian walks, polar journeys, and work-related trips. Once published, his diaries will form a unique, long-term autobiography, complemented by historic photographs.Now in his 70s, John has three grown children: John, a customs officer in Melbourne; Andrew, a former Victorian policeman now in Sweden; and Isabelle, a violinist and teacher based in Brussels. His brother, Alexander, a doctor, passed away in his late 60s. John lives in Far North Queensland.
