Los estudiantes retoman su capital lingüstico y públicamente hacen que sus voces trasciendan y sus historias perduren, como un acto de amor a su lengua materna, en una dinámica de alternancia contacto, hasta de amalgamamiento entre el español y el inglés, lejos de toda supresión. Living In Two Languages is a journey through memory, the power of the word, and the capacity for resilience by students in the Spanish for Heritage Speakers at Chemeketa Community College. She has a Ph.D. in Romance Languages and a Master's in Hispanic Literature from the University of Oregon. She specializes in Latin American and Chicano literature and postcolonial studies. She arrived in the United States more than a decade ago with her five-year-old son and has lived through the vicissitudes of being an immigrant, working and studying in a different culture. Currently, she teaches Spanish for Heritage Speakers at Chemeketa Community College. She lives in Woodburn, Oregon, with her family, whom she considers bilingual and multicultural. She embraces bilingualism as a path to building a democratic culture. Dr. Cecelia Monto is a Dean at Chemeketa Community College and an advocate for equity-based programs at the community college. Monto initiated a bilingual path for education students, and she has successfully integrated the Oregon Seal of Biliteracy into higher education to honor bilingual student assets. Monto has been instrumental in improving transfer in Oregon and served as co-chair for the first Major Transfer Map in the state for Education majors. She founded a rural adult literacy project in Oaxaca, Mexico, in 2004 as a sabbatical project (which she continues to oversee), participated in a Fulbright exchange to Argentina, and is bilingual.
