Vietnam 1968: My Year in Duc Pho

Overview

Bill Marinaccio was pursuing the American dream when the military draft interrupted his life. Arriving in Vietnam only a few weeks before the Tet Offensive, he experienced the full range of hostile action-exploding rockets and hand grenades, deaths of fellow soldiers, ""neutralization"" of enemies, alleged war crimes, and cover-ups.Returning to the US after his twelve-month tour, Marinaccio discovered that attitudes toward the War had evolved, and he was met with indifference to his service. No one seemed interested in listening to him, and he turned his efforts toward repressing his horrific war experiences. Forty years later, his suppressed memories came roaring back, and he suffered debilitating anxiety, insomnia, and terrifying nightmares. Finally, Bill sought help through VA Services and was diagnosed with PTSD. His therapy-writing about and even drawing his most troubling memories-led to his recovery and eventually to Vietnam 1968, a book richly illustrated with forty-six photos and drawings by the author.Readers who have never experienced war will be enlightened by the powerful details. For veterans of Vietnam or more recent wars, the book will ""ring true"" and perhaps provide inspiration for those struggling with PTSD.

Reviews

A part of American history that must never be forgotten-a powerful reading experience, a must read. Highly descriptive prose and vivid illustrations by the author makes for a powerful reading experience. -Dr. Anne Yarrow, Retired Professor of Fine Arts, Molloy University I worked alongside Bill Marinaccio in Vietnam. His book is highly readable and gives great insight into the life of a Military Intelligence Secret Agent. Bill worked closely with infantry to find the enemy, and he did so with great distinction. His story is one I am happy he told, and he told it well. -Ret. Lt. Bill Hawkins, US Army
