Here she takes all her brilliance and shines it on an important piece of overlooked history: The women cartoonists who paved the way for her at The New Yorker. It's wonderful."" Susan Orlean, Best Selling Author of the Orchid Thief and The New Yorker Columnist NetGalley Review: 4 stars Last updated on 01 Oct 2021 ""The discussion of the pre-war years are as much of a capsule history of US society as a history of cartoonists featured in The New Yorker. It's also as much of a history of the magazine itself and an exploration of the creative process, too. It was fascinating to get to know the women who drew for The New Yorker--I loved the pictures of both the artists and their unpublished work. There are definitely depressing realities to confront. It wasn't until 2017 that a magazine featured more female artists than males. And, from 1956 to 1974, not a single new woman's work was published. These circumstances make the work of these pioneering women even more worthy of close study and I'm glad to have learned their stories. Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!""--L Gage, educator at BookWorks" ""Everything Liza Donnelly does is insightful, sharp, and, above all, funny.
