Overview

A disgraced knight earns a meager living as a private inquiry agent in 1383 London in a series debut that will appeal to mystery and history fans alike (Kirkus Reviews). Accused of treason and stripped of his knighthood, Crispin Guest has survived on the gritty streets of London by reinventing himself as The Tracker, an investigator for hire who can locate lost objects and uncover secrets. When the merchant Nicholas Walcote hires Guest to investigate his young wife Philippa for adultery, he discovers an underground world of danger and dirty dealings. Philippa is indeed hiding something--but she's not the only one. Walcote himself is rumored to possess a holy relic so powerful that some would even kill for it. To get to the truth about the mysterious Walcotes, Guest must contend with his nemesis, Sheriff Simon Wynchecombe, as he becomes entangled in a strange world of superstition, seduction, and murder. With vivid period detail and a complex, thrilling story, Veil of Lies was a finalist for the Macavity and Shamus awards.

Author Information

"Jeri Westerson worked in a bevy of careers prior to setting her sights on becoming a novelist. Would-be actress, graphic artist, theology teacher, tasting host and tour guide for a winery, and newspaper reporter were among them. She wanted to create her own brand of medieval mystery, and combined the concept of medieval mystery with hard-boiled detective fiction into what she calls ""Medieval Noir."" Her novel Veil of Lies, garnered nominations for the Macavity Award for Best Historical Mystery and the Shamus Award for Best First PI Novel, the first medieval mystery to be so honored. She has lectured around the country about the Middle Ages, demonstrating her cache of medieval weaponry, and is vice president for the southern California chapter of Mystery Writers of America. She is also a member of Private Eye Writers of America and the Historical Novel Society. She is married to a commercial photographer, has a screenwriter son, and herds two cats, a tortoise, and the occasional tarantula at her home in southern California. Noah James Butler originally hails from New Mexico. He received his first taste of the business of show as an extra on an episode of Unsolved Mysteries, after which he began tirelessly pursuing any form of performance he could get himself into. This brought him to The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Manhattan, and upon graduation, on to The College of Santa Fe, where he received a degree in philosophy. Moving to Oakland, California, he quickly created a thriving theater career, and then discovered voice-over. His love of listening to old-time radio shows, especially The Mercury Theatre's production of Orson Welles's War of the Worlds, finally landed Noah in the realm of audiobooks. It was love at first listen, and Noah set out to create a truly immersive experience for the listener."
