When Winston Churchill delivered his famous ‘Iron Curtain’ speech in 1946, he mentioned two words now engrained in Anglo-American terminology - ‘special relationship’. Nowhere is the ‘special relationship’ more evident than in the scores of airfields used by the United States Army Air Forces during the Second World War. Today, just a handful remain in active service. Yet they continue to bind the United Kingdom and United States together. Author Information

Paul Bingley has worked in the aviation industry for over thirty years and is responsible for leasing the world’s heaviest aircraft, the AN-225. He has written a number of features for national and international publications and is also the chairman of a museum dedicated to preserving the legacy of a US Army Air Forces’ heavy bomber base at Ridgewell in Essex. James Hollandis a historian, writer and broadcaster responsible for a number of best-selling histories of The Battle of Britain and Dam Busters. He has worked with the BBC, Channel 4, National Geographic, History and Discovery. He is also the co-founder of the Chalke Valley History Festival. He lives in Salisbury.
