OverviewThis book explores the vital role of urban green spaces in mitigating environmental challenges, enhancing urban sustainability, and improving the quality of life in densely populated cities. Based on extensive doctoral research, this book provides a comprehensive assessment of how urban greenery impacts air quality, temperature regulation, biodiversity conservation, and public health. By focusing on Kolkata, a rapidly urbanizing metropolis, the book offers insights that are applicable to other urban centers facing similar challenges worldwide. This work is distinctive because it integrates geospatial analysis, environmental science, and urban planning to present an in-depth evaluation of green spaces. It employs cutting-edge methodologies such as satellite imagery, land use/land cover change detection, and spatial modeling to assess the transformation of urban green spaces over time. The findings provide essential data-driven recommendations for urban policymakers, environmentalists, and planners striving for sustainable city development.
