Unreliable Narrator

Overview

'Araminta’s books always promise to be thrilling escapes with the most satisfying and unexpected twists, and Unreliable Narrator proves to be no different' – Elisabeth Moss When Hope finds her real life in the pages of a bestselling novel, truth and fiction become blurred. As a young woman, Hope’s dreams are as aspirational as her name. Curious and beautiful, she lands a job working for an up-and-coming author at his Somerset home. Drawn into the orbit of a glamorous bohemian elite, she quickly falls under the spell of this exotic world, which revolves around Ambrose Glencourt, his artist wife and their semi-adopted son, Tom. But her time with them ends in a fatal disaster. She has kept the truth of those events a secret ever since. Ten years on, Hope lives a lonely life that she has accepted not just as penance for what she did, but also to protect Ambrose. Except he hasn’t upheld his side of the bargain and is using her story in his new novel. And he has a very different tale to tell about what happened that summer . . . But which one of them is a reliable narrator? And at what cost do you take control of the narrative of your own life? * * * Praise for Araminta Hall: ‘One of the most daring and intriguing writers working today’ – Gillian Flynn ‘Razor-sharp, spine-tinglingly convincing and unputdownable’ – Lisa Jewell ‘Groundbreaking’ – The Sunday Times

Reviews

What a dark, immersive feminist thriller. Hall writes so powerfully about monstrous men, and the privilege that allows them to exist; about the women they break so carelessly; and about a glittering setting that turns out to be as toxic as it is intoxicating. But – as her name suggests – there is always Hope, and I was cheering her protagonist on as she became increasingly intent on reclaiming her narrative and wreaking justifiable revenge. Clever, sharp, and simmers with a perfectly contained rage -- Sarah Vaughan, author of Anatomy of a Scandal One of those books that will stay with me long after I've finished turning the pages -- Nikki Smith, author of They Had It Coming Araminta’s books always promise to be thrilling escapes with the most satisfying and unexpected twists, and Unreliable Narrator proves to be no different -- Elisabeth Moss I have long admired Araminta Hall’s exquisite, razor sharp writing and this is no exception. In Unreliable Narrator, she fillets every tiny bone of nuance, takes a fresh look at power dynamics and asks how much we can trust what we are told – even by our own memories -- Holly Seddon, author of 59 Minutes I lost myself completely in this dark, twisting dream of a book, brilliantly written, immersive and gripping until the last line. I just loved it -- Eve Chase, author of The Secret Thread
