OverviewThomas Taylor Munford was the most senior, and likely the most important, cavalry colonel in Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. As a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, Munford was well placed, but not a member of the West Point military elite. This likely contributed to his being overlooked repeatedly for promotion to brigadier general, despite having commanded Fitzhugh Lee's brigade in some of the war's most important battles and commanding a division at the end of the war. Bitterness over these snubs and other issues led to Munford's famous feud with Major General Thomas L. Rosser, the subject of author Sheridan Barringer's previous work. Col. Munford wrote prolifically about his experiences in the war and provided much insight into important officers within the cavalry corps of the Army of Northern Virginia. This is a biography worthy of shelf space in the library of every serious student of the American Civil War. Table of ContentsReviewsBarringer has crafted an amazingly compelling history of the life and career of the most underrated and overlooked Confederate cavalry commander during the entire Civil War, Col. Thomas T. Munford. This book corrects an historical injustice, at long last, by elevating Col. Munford out of anonymity. Barringer settles Jeb Stuart's besmirching of Munford's performance at Brandy Station, once and for all, in Col. Munford's favor. I have never read a biography that is as interesting and as accurate as this remarkable book. Clark B. Hall, Founder and Past-President of the Brandy Station Foundation Barringer has once again demonstrated his extraordinary talent for researching and writing. Drawing from a large body of sources rich in official reports, diaries, letters, and battle accounts, Unhonored Service brings to light the story of Col. Thomas T. Munford and his wartime service as senior cavalry commander. A must have for any student of Civil War mounted operations. Wade Sokolosky, author of To Prepare for Sherman's Coming The Battle of Wise's Forks, March 1865 Probably the best summary of this book is that Munford was the most important Confederate officer that you probably never heard of, and Barringer brings Munford's importance into full clarity. Thomas T. Munford was witness to nearly every important officer and action in the Army of Northern Virginia and successfully commanded well above his pay grade, occasionally commanding Fitz Lee's division of cavalry. Nonetheless, political reasons kept him locked at the rank of colonel. This is a brilliantly well-done book about a fascinating figure who, until now, has been denied the full study he so richly deserves. J. Keith Jones, author of Echoes From Gettysburg: Georgia's Memories and Images "Barringer has crafted an amazingly compelling history of the life and career of the most underrated and overlooked Confederate cavalry commander during the entire Civil War, Col.
