Overview

Soil properties such as water retention, salinity and acidity are not just issues for agriculture and forestry. They are equally as significant in creating environmental and structural problems for buildings and other engineering works. As a greater proportion of the world's population is now living in cities, and building and related infrastructure development continues, these problems assume ever-greater importance. Author Information

Pam Hazelton teaches soils in the Faculty of Engineering, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia. She is the vice president of the International Union of Soil Scientists Commission for Education in Soil Science and a former President of the Australian Society of Soil Science. Brian Murphy is a Senior Soil Scientist at the NSW Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources, Research Centre, Australia.
