'पेन्टर की प्रेम कहानी' आर.के. नारायण के चहेते काल्पनिक शहर 'मालगुडी' पर आधारित है। यह कहानी पेन्टर रमन की है, जो विभिन्न प्रकार के विज्ञापन साइन बोर्ड पेन्ट कर अपना गुज़ारा करता है और एक दिन उसकी ज़िंदगी में आती है डेज़ी, जो परिवार नियोजन क्लिनिक चलाती है और रमन से परिवार नियोजन को प्रोत्साहन देने वाला साइन बोर्ड बनाने के लिए कहती है। रमन एक तरफ तो डेज़ी के सौन्दर्य के मायाजाल में अपने को फंसता पाता है और दूसरी तरफ उसके काम करने के स्वतंत्र स्वभाव से कुछ हिचकिचाता भी है। डेज़ी और रमन एक दूसरे से बिल्कुल अलग हैं तब भी एक दूसरे की तरफ़ आकर्षित हैं। आर.के. नारायण भारत के पहले ऐसे लेखक थे जिनके अंग्रेज़ी लेखन को विश्वभर में प्रसिद्धि मिली। अपनी रचनाओं के लिए रोचक कथानक चुनने और फिर उसे शालीन हास्य मंर पिरोने के कारण वे पुस्तकप्रेमियों के पसंदीदा लेखक बन गए हैं।
