OverviewThis book offers an overview of the various new security challenges that have emerged in the global environment in the post-Cold War era. Globalization has certainly changed the character of threats to human, national and international security. The present security discourse stands in major contrast to the traditional realist understanding of security that prevailed during the Cold War. This book aims to familiarize readers with the emerging theories and themes in international security studies. Various chapters of the book critically examine the so-called 'soft' security issues that have emerged since the end of Cold War. After the fall of the Berlin Wall and with the shifting of international political environment, a new broader concept of security began to gain acceptance, which includes socio-economic-environmental challenges, such as resource scarcity and climate change, water-sharing issues, deforestation and forest protection measures, food and health security, and large population migration. The book examines the causes of these emerging security threats, with a critical focus on existing and evolving approaches to addressing them. This book will be of much interest to students of global security, war and conflict studies, peace studies and IR in general.
