Beautifully written. Juris Jurjevics, The Trudeau Vector. Under the Wings of a Good Luck Phoenix can be likened to The Diary of Anne Frank. Both books are written from the perspective of young girls about the same age. One during WWII and one during the Viet Nam conflict. Roberta Burton, The Burgundy Briefcase What a refreshing story - the early days of the Vietnam War seen through the eyes of a 12 year old girl. Clear-sighted, entertaining, caring, understand and empathetic. Lucinda E. Clarke, Truth, Lies, and Propaganda Kathy Dobronyi has an amazing memory for detail. The reader is treated to a vision of life in Southeast Asian early in the development the Vietnam War. Marc Severson, The Chaos Series An interesting book that explains a lot about the American politics behind what was going on in Vietnam in the sixties and about what was happening in the rest of Indochina at the time. Anthony Stancomb, Under the Croatian Sky Under the Wings of the Good Luck Phoenix possesses all the qualities of an effective memoir told through the perspective of an insightful, curious, reflective 12-year-old trying to understand a foreign environment, and the events unfolding around her. Steffanie Grotz, teacher How many young girls can tell a story about living in Saigon in the 60's? That aspect alone is intriguing. Kathy had a unique experience that few could describe. I love her narrative, her humor and getting to know her family. Jan Hall This is not your typical Viet Nam memoir. Fred Remer If you want to read a page-turner, Under the Wings of a Good Luck Phoenix by Kathy Conner Dobronyi is your book. Faye Kufal Talk about a good read ... It had everything - history, authentic color, suspense, all from the perspective of a young American girl experiencing life in a very foreign land at a critical time - critical for the countries of Viet Nam and the USA, and critical for a 12 year old developing her own conscience. T. Rusnak A great book. It is so well written that you feel as though you are having a conversation. The topics are interesting and if you are of an age that the Vietnam War was a part of your life, it engages you. Plus, there are perspectives on situations that I never saw written before and seemed very logical and accurate. Gene Christie She expresses her view of a world surrounded by adults who seem oblivious to the dangers and corruption. A lesson that Kathy illustrates America didn't learn as it slowly slips into the conflict. We know that becoming an adult takes time, patience, and a commitment. Neither she nor America would have that time in the early 60's. Vietnam would force them both to mature early. Bruce Howard This is a great historical work that will enrich the book collections of all readers who love history. Mary Perry This would be an excellent book for reading by adolescents/young adults about the time period as well as by adults. Kathy Connor Dobronyi keeps the reader's interest with specific events and her own personal observations from that time in her life. Terry Bagwell Under the Wings of the Good Luck Phoenix is an excellent example of a coming of age narrative with the added problems of making sense of life in a foreign environment immersed in violence. Her early exposure to such a disparate culture and belief system spinning out of control had her questioning whether the institutions of family and government could be relied on to provide a safe haven for those they were charged to protect. Great insight into the time period. I couldn't put the book down. An excellent account of Vietnam & a young girl's experiences in the 60's. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in events leading up the Viet Nam war. Teresa Lucente I enjoyed reading about Vietnam in 1963-64 from a young girl's experience. Good read.

Author Information

Kathy Connor Dobronyi was born in New Jersey and baptized in Maryland. She was in Hawaii when it became a state and Viet Nam when it became a war. Those were the first 12 years of her life. In 2010, Kathy participated in the Vietnam Oral History Project at Texas Tech. Kathy lives on the west coast of Florida with her husband and their cat. From January 1967 to February 1968, Lee served as an infantryman in Viet Nam, including the 1968 Tet Offensive. He worked in the newspaper field as an editor and writer until his retirement in 2008. As an editor and a Vietnam veteran, Lee states it was an honor to work with Kathy to help her tell her story. Roger Dobronyi loves to draw. To him art isn't just taking a story and converting it visually, it is the story. This talent helped his wife, Kathy. Working together, he drew Nam's portrait, a map of French Indo-China and a picture of a pedicab.
