Overview

It seems as though we may have a new variation on the James Bond/Jason Bourne prototype, but Leon Afflelou is a bit more complicated - and that makes for terrific reading - Amazon reviewer DESCRIPTION Leon Afflelou Baker, born to an American father and a Tunisian mother, and educated in a top US school, lives an enviable life style in 1930's Tunisia. Sitting in his favourite bar, overlooking the sea, and drinking pastis, and getting paid for it, Leon contemplates if life could be any better; he has an easy job, his own apartment, a loving girlfriend, and great friends. But life is about to change forever. Just hours later, he is on the run from the police, brutally chased, accused of spying and carrying a death sentence on his head. This book takes Leon, and the reader, on a fast-paced, weaving chase in which he must stay ahead of both the local and the French police, as well as German intelligence. The only person who believes his innocence is a member of the British intelligence organization, the SOE, who are operating in the area. But their support does not come easily; Leon is persuaded into going under-cover on an Italian island; his mission, to find out why one of their operatives has gone missing. Set in the 1930's, during an era of national distrust, global posturing, and improvised spying, Leon finds that he must learn new skills do what is needed to clear his name. After living many years in his mundane life, Leon Baker realizes with shock, that this might be the type of work he could get used to. Is he merely an unfortunate bystander in a deadly game?
