Overview

U N? - A New Play What will happen if a global power rises which has no checks and balances and is accountable to no one? The 21st century will see, and the UN Agenda 21 is the blueprint. Like the carnivore jellyfish, the UN never stops growing. In U N?, playwright Mark Ruhala gives us another controversial look at global societal institutions, this time he aims at the United Nations. While it is common knowledge that the United Nations has been plagued by scandals that harm the very people it purports to help, it is not so common for people to question the institution itself. But Lisa Cohen, a highly educated, self-taught, precocious 9 year old from the elite 1% asks the UN delegation tough questions as she speaks to the general assembly. In her speech she addresses the phenomenon of constant war, which the UN 's mission has been to prevent since 1945. She asks why send soldiers to keep peace, wondering about the logic and asking if there aren't better ways. Why, for instance should countries give up their sovereignty for a global world power, especially when it has no checks on its power or accountability to any other body? When condescendingly questioned by a UN delegate following the speech, Lisa, with her mentor, backs her arguments with warnings a plenty from historical figures of American history alongside quotes from the world's elite power brokers explicitly stating their views to take over the world with a new global body.
