Not illustrated. 1728 Excerpt: ...as is here supposed, independently of the Mind, should proceed from a Power of perceiving it. Now it's evident 'that if Notions, and Ideas, are not (as hath been shewn) derived from or owing to the Objects which they concern in the fame way or manner, that they must needs dif-i fer from one another in their Kind or Na-ture: For a different manner of Derivation, or Production and Origination always necessarily implies, that the things produced and derived must differ from one another, according to it: And otherwise indeed no manner of reason could be given, why things should differ at all in their Natures and Properties, as we find they do. $ Mr. Mr. Locke, no doubt, took it for granted, that a Notion, and an Idea, are both derived from the Objects they refer to, in the same way and manner. For, over and over again, he mightily insists upon this, c That external material Things, or the e Objects of Sensation, are the Originals from whence all the Mind's Ideas (;. e. according to him, all the Mind's Notions, as well as Images) of such Objects are derived and take their Beginnings. And he continually urges it as plain and undeniable Evidence, (and as far as I remember, it is the only Proof or Argument he offers to make appear) that the Mind's Thoughts or Notions are nothing else but Ideas; not being aware, that the Way or Manner of their Derivation and Beginning being wholly different, 'tis impossible they should agree, or be the fame, in their Kind and Nature. And seeing that this his Doctrine and Opinion is at present very current, and pastes unquestioned by most of his Readers, it will not be amiss to shew that it is false and ill-grounded, by such other Arguments as the Nature of the thing affords.
