An avid outdoorsman, he has fished Minnesota's lakes and rivers, and hunted its fields and forests. He is a married (Kelly) father of two (Greg and Andy), with four granddaughters (Madison, Claire, Sylvia, and Lucy). Barnes is now retired from the social studies classroom where he taught history, geography, civics, and economics.
