Overview

Trypanosomosis is a parasitic disease transmitted cyclically by the tsetse fly (glossina spp.), and is considered the main constraint to livestock production in some areas. Sleeping sickness is caused in humans by a species of trypanosoma, and is an important and neglected disease posing a threat to millions of people in tsetse-infected areas. This is a comprehensive survey of the literature on tsetse-transmitted trypanosomosis.

Here is a well referenced, up-to-date and practical discussion of a parasitic disease affecting livestock and humans with a major regional effect and potential international impact. The book is an invaluable reference for veterinary and medical entomologists and parasitologists. The epidemiological aspects are relevant for physicians and veterinarians. Its chief strength is that it reviews ecology and trypanosomiasis epidemiology in breadth and depth. . . . The book contains a detailed table of contents, list of figures and tables, and is unusually well indexed. It affords a thorough guide to the literature, with 115 pages of citations. . . . Tsetse Biology and Ecology is timely and likely to be well received. It reviews in some depth modern developments in Glossina and Trypanosoma brucei biology. . . . The present volume will prove most useful to field and bench scientists in medical entomology and parasitology. It will be an indispensable reference for scientists involved in tsetse and trypanosomiasis research and control programs. Animal health staff in the international agencies will find it essential. [It] will become the standard reference on tsetse for years to come. --The Quarterly Review of Biology
