Table of ContentsReviewsAuthor Michael Wagner is one of Canada's unsung heroes, a man who publishes book after well-researched book for the single purpose of reminding Canadian conservatives that they still have a future and a hope in spite of the left's all-too-apparent advantages. True Right: Genuine Conservative Leaders of Western Canada, is a follow on from his earlier works, most especially Standing on Guard for Thee: The Past, Present and Future of Canada's Christian Right. The same point is made in both books, namely that true conservatism, with its Christian roots, is native to Canada and seminal for Canada's government and ethos. In fact, as Wagner has proven in other works, Christian conservatism is the foundation of all that has made Canada great and prosperous. This book is a fantastic addition to Wagner's oeuvre because it delineates the leading western Canadian conservative voices of the twentieth century, examines their political thought and impact, and demonstrates conclusively that without western conservatism Canada would long ago have drowned its distinctive culture in the slough of Old World socialism. That is the first half of the book. But the second half, in which Wagner examines the thinking and writing of Ted and Link Byfield, father and son and, respectively, founder and publisher of Alberta Report Newsmagazine, is perhaps his book's most important contribution toward strengthening the foundation of conservative thought. Full disclosure: it was my privilege to serve as a senior editor and, toward the magazine's end in 2003, managing editor of Alberta Report. Nevertheless, I insist that one can argue objectively that through their columns, written either for their magazine or published elsewhere, the Byfields were Canada's preeminent conservative prophets and teachers. They predicted and explained the current breakdown of society two decades ago, and then went on to prescribe the necessary, though presently unpopular curatives. Wagner's sterling achievement has been to distill and present to his readers the pure essence of their thinking on the relevant issues of our time. One feels that no one can read this material without being inspired to pray and, one hopes, to work for the day when conservatism once more guides the nation. - Shafer Parker, Jr., Pastor, Hawkwood Baptist Church, Calgary, and former Senior Editor of Alberta Report magazine. Michael has assiduously outlined several Canadian politicians and writers who have looked, albeit imperfectly, to the Bible to inform their social conservatism, and to limited government and the rule of law to lessen the effects of fallen man in the economic and political realms. Learn about several impactive Western Canadian leaders and then stand on their shoulders to lead Canada in the direction of what Michael calls Byfield conservatism. Share this book widely with your friends and teach the crisp and inspiring biographies it contains to the next generation. -Ted Tederoff, Past President, Alberta Home Education Association Author InformationTab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
