Overview

Examines the lasting impact of the work of journalist and film duo Marie-Claude Deffarge and Gordian Troeller. French-born Marie-Claude Deffarge (1924-1984) and Luxembourgian Gordian Troeller (1917-2003) collaborated as freelance journalists from the 1950s until Deffarange's premature death. Initially, they reported mainly from the Marie-Claude Deffarge (1924–1984) and Gordian Troeller (1917–2003) collaborated as freelance journalists from the 1950s on, reporting subjectively and controversially from all over the world. This first comprehensive book on their work celebrates their outstanding features and film work that reveal the evolution of 20th-century critical photojournalism and has lost nothing of its relevance: Deffarge & Troeller investigated the roots of political conflicts that continue to shape world events to this day. More than 1000 images-photos, entire reportages and film previews, book maquettes, contact sheets, film stills and scripts, as well as other documents-are supplemented by texts that contextualize Deffarge & Troeller's core topics, their approach, and the reception of their work. In addition, media professionals from some of the countries Deffarge & Troeller reported from comment on the duo's reportages and documentaries, offering new, contemporary perspectives on a journalism that, despite its critical stance, was inevitably shaped by a Eurocentric view of the world. Text in English and German. AUTHOR: Museum Folkwang, founded in 1897 and based in Essen since 1922, is one of Germany's foremost art museums, holding fine collections of painting and sculpture from early modernism to contemporary, archaeology and world art, as well as photography, graphic and poster art. Founded in 1989, the Centre national de l'audiovisuel (CNA) in Dudelange preserves and promotes Luxembourg's audiovisual heritage through exhibitions, screenings and publications. SELLING POINTS: . First comprehensive book on the joint photographic and film work of the journalist duo Marie-Claude Deffarge and Gordian Troeller . Lavishly illustrated, including previously unpublished material from the estate of Deffarge and Troeller . Troeller & Deffarge's largely forgotten journalism until today represents a significant contribution to a better understanding of world events . Highlights the significance of Marie-Claude Deffarge's influence on the choice of topics, content, and execution of the joint projects, who often remained overshadowed by her husband Gordian Troeller . Exhibitions: Troeller & Deffarge: Stern Features and Films at Museum Folkwang, Essen (November 15, 2024 to February 23, 2025) and at the Centre national de l'audiovisuel, Dudelange (spring 2026) 647 colour and 372 b/w illustrations
