Overview

"This newly discovered educational experiment documents the extraordinary work of Giulia Civita Franceschi in her mission to transform the street urchins of Naples (1913-1928) into living models of dignified conscientious citizens by redeeming them from juvenile delinquencey, crime and prison through maritime training on the ship ""Caracciolo"". This book is the result of an operation that is both historical research and retrieval of memory made possible by the discovery of a private Archive, that now is available at the ""Museo del Mare"" of Naples. The experience of the Training Ship ""Caracciolo"" and the ""Civita method"" were inspired by the principle of the ""Redeemer Sea"", which is capable of turning street urchins into young sailors. The ""Civita Method"" did not simply teach the boys a useful skill for life but also prepared them to be conscientious and dignified citizens proud of having walked the walk to social redemption and true resilience. The activities on board the ship started in 1913, after the Bill for which the Ministry of the Navy donated to the City of Naples the old corvette ""Caracciolo"". The ""Caracciolo"" was designed to accommodate both the orphans of sailors and the abandoned children of Naples, better known in Italy and the rest of the world by the name of ""scugnizzi"". Giulia Civita Franceschi first set foot on board the ship in August 1913 at the age of forty-three, and remained there as Head of the educational institution until 1928. She was removed by the Fascist regime, which, bent on its totalitarian intent incorporated it into the Opera Nazionale Balilla."

"Dr. Maria Antonietta Selvaggio, received her Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Naples ""Federico II"". She was a former secondary school history and philosophy teacher and expert of history didactics. She is now Sociology Researcher at the Department of Human, Philosophical and Educational Sciences of Salerno University (Italy), where she teaches Methods and Techniques of Social Research."
