Overview

Transfontanellar Doppler imaging was until recently an emerging new diagnostic modality that was not widely used in clinical practice. Dr. A. Couture and Dr. C. Veyrac have pioneered and incessantly developed the tech and neonatal brain scanning until it has now been matured into an nique of prenatal indispensable tool for the correct management of infants. Building upon the technical progress in the manufacturing of scanning probes and ultrasonic equipment, the authors have been able to accumulate a unique and exceptional body of knowledge on fetal and neonatal brain scanning. Their book provides exquisite information not only on the normal neonatal brain, but also on the various pathological conditions and malformations involving the fetal and neonatal brain as provided by ultrasound examination. The book contains numerous illustrative examples, selected from the outstanding personal files of the authors. Transfontanellar Doppler imaging, because of its great impact on the management of neonates suspected of brain abnormalities, should be available to all pediatric and general radiologists involved in brain scanning in the pediatric age group. They, and also neurologists and neurosurgeons, will find this volume a unique source of information and knowledge. I congratulate the editors on their outstanding performance and I wish this volume great success within the medical community. Leuven ALBERT L. BAERT Preface Alain Couture belongs to the breed of pioneers. This requires several unusual traits: orginality, tenacity and vision, and of course hard work.

Reviews

"From the reviews: ""Drs Alain Couture and Corinne Veyrac have been pioneers and experts in brain imaging with ultrasonography (US) since its initial development in the 1970s. In this book, they discuss and illustrate the applications of transfontanellar Doppler and color Doppler US in the evaluation of the newborn and fetal brain. … The authors are to be complimented for their original and extensively reviewed work. … it deserves its place in the library of pediatric radiologists and other specialists interested in neonatal brain imaging."" (Maria Ines Boechat, Radiology, November, 2002) ""This book describes in detail the role of transfontanellar pulsed and colour Doppler imaging in the fetus and neonate. … a highly detailed overview is given of the normal anatomy of cerebral arteries and veins. … The authors successfully link physiopathogenic phenomena with the clinical context and haemodynamic US findings. Their experience is extensively discussed with data from the literature and recommendations are given to avoid misinterpretation. This splendid book is a must for all with a special interest in perinatal cerebral disease."" (M. Smet, European Radiology, Vol. 12 (10), 2002) ""It was a pleasure to review this excellent book on neonatal cranial ultrasound. I am sure it will become an invaluable reference for paediatric radiologists, general radiologists who perform paediatric scans and neonatologists. There is an excellent introductory chapter on the normal neonatal brain, with very detailed anatomical drawings … . All chapters comprise excellent reviews with useful practical tips and detailed critical review of the literature. … this is a superb book which should form a core text for all departments performing neonatal ultrasound.""
