Reviews

Renowned World War II historian, BRUCE BOLINGER, has included TRAIN Z in his list of ESCAPE AND INVASION BOOKS on his website. Professor IAN F. HANCOCK, Ph.D., linguist, and Romani scholar has included TRAIN Z in the ROMANI ARCHIVES. I enjoyed reading this historical-fiction narrative about the harrowing trek of a loving Roma (Gypsy) husband and wife. The book's main theme is its portrayal of heroes and heroines of the Resistance who fought bravely, many sacrificing their lives. I love historical fiction and this compelling story takes you on a journey with a young Romani (gypsy) couple in Belgium during World War II. Did not want their story to end. Would make a gripping edge of your seat movie. Highly recommend. This suspenseful thriller is so skillfully crafted that I found it hard to put down. Every line in the story contributes to advance the swiftly moving story. It is a faithful representation of the secret army's successful role in defying the Nazi aggressors in providing crucial help to the Allies. It's a wonderful book. An aspect of history that we think we know (but there's more) with compelling characters and an exciting and complex plot.

Author Information

In 2013, I saw a program about the well-guarded 20th train from the Nazi's Mechelen Transit Camp in Brussels to Auschwitz. It was stopped by three Belgian resistance members who helped seventeen Jewish prisoners escape. That program sent me on a quest to research and write a story about Train Z, the only one of 28 trains from the Mechelen Transit Camp to have Romani prisoners onboard. I also wanted to salute the Belgian resistance and the Roma in this book who fought for freedom during World War II.
