OverviewIn February of 1878, Johnny Stevens and his family picked up and left their Iowa roots, seeking to homestead in Nebraska. When they embarked in covered wagons on their journey-a trip that would end up taking more than twenty days-they had no idea what dangers and adventures lurked ahead. Based on letters and writings from the author's great-grandfather, Tracks in the Snow captures the spirit of a boy growing up in the pioneer days on the prairie. Joel Schnoor is a master of character development, and these books tell an important chapter of American history while engaging the reader in what life was like for the early settlers of the Midwest. These books remind me of the Little House books, except that these books have more depth, and events in the story are seen through the eyes of a boy. It's difficult to find good young adult literature that may be appealing to both boys and girls, but I think that Joel Schnoor has nailed it with this series. -- Jennifer S. Steinhauser, teacher I really value the book for the excellent lessons that it gently teaches as we watch Johnny's family deal with life's ups and downs. It also helps to fill out a picture of the day-to-day lives of our nation's settlers. What a gift Joel has! -- M.S.
