"The text traces the twin processes of economic liberalization and political democratization in Bolivia since the 1980s, placing both in their historical context. By focusing on the issue of democratic ""viability"", it seeks to raise the broader question of the relationship between democratization and the socio-economic context in which it takes place. In particular, it examines the institutional reforms of the early 1990s praised by the World Bank and others and considers their achievements and limitations."

JOHN CRABTREE is an independent researcher and writer on Latin America and was Latin America editor at Oxford Analytica from 1985-1998. He is the author of Peru under Alan Garcia: An Opportunity Lost (1992), editor of Fujimori's Peru: The Political Economy (1998) and co-author of The Great Tin Crash (1991). - LAURENCE WHITEHEAD is an Official Fellow in Politics at Nuffield College Oxford. He is also co-editor of the Journal of Latin America Studies and series editor of the Oxford Studies on Democratization. He first published on Bolivia in 1960s and has written numerous articles and other contributions since then.
