Overview

Concentration camp survivor, former Marxist-Leninist and Lithuanian patriot, Aleksandras Shtromas devoted his life to understanding totalitarianism and political change. He was a remarkably prescient thinker and is probably best known for his prediction of the fall of the Soviet Union, forecast at a time when the might empire seemed almost invincible. This posthumous collection of writings addresses some of the topics that preoccupied Shtromas throughout his life, including totalitarian regimes, post-communist transitions, the fates of the Baltic states, and the nature of political revolutions.

Reviews

This collection does justice to the intellectual legacy of one of the pre-emiinent thinkers of the twentieth century. Political Studies Review Totalitarianism and the Prospects for World Order is...an impressive intellectual autobiography of a very interesting man. For those wishing to explore his work further, the book concludes with a complete bibliography. Alexander Shtromas's insight, scholarship, and defense of human rights and human dignity will be missed by the profession. The Russian Review
