OverviewThe first half of the eighteenth century which saw the rise of the Kalhoras in Sindh also saw the eclipse of the two great dynasties of the east - the Mughals in India and the Safavids in Persia. For Sindh which had been subject to Mughal rule from 1591 onwards, the erosion of imperial authority in Delhi meant an opportunity for it to assert its sovereignty. The decline of the Mughal power however opened the subcontinent to the traditional invasions from the northeast for plunder and territorial gain. But though plagued by external invasions and sent by internal divisions and various factions of the ruling family contended for power, the Kalhoras managed to ensure relative stability for Sindh at a time when the rest of the subcontinent was racked by civil wars. As with most Muslim dynasties the Kalhoras too left their mark on the architectural landscape of Sindh, in the form of monuments and tombs for its dead chiefs. Full Product DetailsAuthor: Siddique G.
