Overview

Motherhood will be a cinch! Organized idealist Sarah prepares to give birth for the first time just like she managed her teaching career--with optimism and color-coded charts. After all, how hard can it be? When breastfeeding doesn't work like a charm and medical issues keep cropping up, Sarah must reconcile her rosy expectations of motherhood with reality. There's joy and wonder, but also spit-up and stitches. Not to mention she's totally incompetent at diapering. As she navigates one crisis after another during her baby's first year, she gradually regains her confidence and grows to accept motherhood as it is instead of how she thinks it should be. Honest, raw, and witty, this memoir-in-verse is the perfect companion for a new mom.

"""The early days of motherhood may not be poetic, but Sarah White's artful recounting of them is. I laughed and cried as Sarah took me on this all-too-relatable journey, as she depicted her own harrowing birth into motherhood. As they say, 'If you know, you know, ' and these intimate, sacred details are an invitation to tell the truth, to let a mother's body and soul be known."" --Catherine McNiel, author of Long Days of Small Things: Motherhood as a Spiritual Discipline ""A must-read book for any mama or mother-to-be! Sarah White captures the emotional paradoxes embedded in motherhood through her engaging storytelling. In sharing her journey, Sarah invites the reader to reflect on her own hopes and longings as a mother. As a mom of three myself, Today I Left the House offered new perspectives to explore the ups and downs of motherhood, for which I am grateful."" --Stephanie Shackelford, author of You on Purpose: Discover Your Calling and Create the Life You Were Meant to Live ""With profound honesty and unflagging wit, Sarah White invites readers into the wild twists and turns of new motherhood. Anyone who has ever navigated the unexpected will find comfort in her generous, vulnerable, and deeply human language and story."" --Cameron Bellm, author of A Consoling Embrace: Prayers for a Time of Pandemic ""When you're in the trenches of motherhood, sometimes you need to hear you're not the only one. This is the gift Sarah White offers us in her humorous and moving memoir. As I read while holding my own newborn, her stories were like a kind friend insisting, 'You are not alone.'"" --Diana Gruver, author of Companions in the Darkness: Seven Saints Who Struggled with Depression and Doubt"
