Betrayed by his companions, Roman Tribune Marcus Maximus escapes certain death with the aid of two strangers, Lucius and Max, only to face a new threat, the trail of smoke flowing from Vesuvius. Marcus invites his new friends to his villa in Pompeii only to find a dwindling water supply, which must be the result of the mountain's odd behavior. All ultimately arrive at a secure faith in turbulent times.
