Overview

The war between both families during the early twentieth century, explodes, fueled by murder and moonshine. Back and forth they played their deadly game, with first one family assuming the role of antagonist and the other protagonist, then reversing their roles for the next confrontation. Even though both of the founding fathers of the Jenkins family and the Masters family were now gone, their absence only seemed to help fuel the animosity between remaining family members. Whether at a church social, or while tending their moonshine in the hills of middle Tennessee, the subject matter of their conflict seemed to expand exponentially, drawing in both old and new members to fight the battle. Eventually, both families found a new life in Nashville, away from the battlefield of Wilson County. But not long after settling, they soon determined even a city of that size wasn't large enough to avoid the conflict. Both families continued to find new methods to finish old issues. Using force and intimidation, their violence throughout the city of Nashville turned the streets red with family blood along with the blood of any innocent bystander unlucky enough to find himself caught in the crossfire.

Review from Reader's Favorite: To Hide From a Northern Wind: Book 2, Wilson County by JB Millhollin is a family saga page-turner you can't put down. This is a continuation of To Hide From a Northern Wind: Spencer Creek, where we are first introduced to the two feuding families, the Jenkins family and the Masters family. The second book in what is to be a set of four has their war raging on. You may have heard of the Hatfields and the McCoys. Well, they have nothing on the Jenkins and Masters' feud, which actually goes on for generations, starting in 1875 over creek water, and which led to brutal legal battles and eventually murder. That's a long time to hold a grudge, but some grudges don't die easily. Not everyone forgives and forgets. In fact, some families seem to thrive on the chaos. Since their properties touched each other, there were many occasions for these two tribes to clash. If you've ever witnessed family feuds, you know it doesn't take much to ignite the powder keg. But though this second offering opens with Thomas becoming a new father and vowing to protect his newborn, the two families seem to be almost cursed with animosity. Imagine hatred so bitter it extends down to the grandchildren. Will there be an end to the anger? Does relocating help? I won't spoil it here. You'll just have to read it for yourself. Millhollin has perfectly captured the die-hard right-fighter. Liquor and lawlessness seep through these pages like blood, and the escalation is palpable. As you read, you wish the two sides could just get along, but it's as if they were destined for such trouble and psychic wounds. The author captures the conflict realistically and creates memorable characters. The family dynamics are interesting. The individuals have their strengths and weaknesses, and the author shows them in their private moments, some of them warm, some of them chilling. Nashville is the place where things could change for the better, but will it be enough to calm things down, or will it revive the nightmare? Sadly, and occasionally, this kind of thing goes on in small rural towns, and larger towns too. This book is the stuff Netflix and TV programs like Fear Thy Neighbor are made of. If you like John Grisham legal thrillers, To Hide from a Northern Wind by JB Millhollin is one you will appreciate.
