Overview

For teachers, this book offers ready-made, thoughtfully crafted, coherent learning plans for young students who are underchallenged by grade-level and uninspiring approaches to math. For parents, the book provides a meaningful solution to the comment, ""I don't have anything good to do today."" For eager young thinkers, the book creates a world in which likeable characters, imagination, words, and numbers combine to create a mental playground where learning happens just for the fun of it---Carol Ann Tomlinson, Ed.D. Curry School of Education, University of Virginia How can we use math to draw human figures with the right proportions? Can math help us to create beautiful and enduring works of art? What can we learn from the ancient Egyptians about area and perimeter? These are some of the questions that students will ponder as they travel back in time with fictional math whizzes, Harriet and Thomas, and join Leonardo da Vinci, Dutch artist M. C. Escher, and ancient Egyptian architect Imhotep, on a quest to answer a timeless riddle: How can we solve everyday problems using math? Time-Travel Math takes an innovative approach to teaching advanced geometry concepts by weaving an adventure-filled story with entertaining practice problems that require deep mathematical thinking. Students will engage in advanced abstract inquiry and will explore new geometry topics such as ratios, angles, regular polygons, symmetry, and area through a combination of challenging lessons and hands-on activities. Time-Travel Math includes fully reproducible worksheets that students can use individually or in groups, as well as detailed rubrics for teachers.
