OverviewTIME OUT FOR SANITY! Dr. Fisher contends that early 21st century America mirrors the United States of anxiety of the 1970s in too many disturbing ways. He states simply that we are stuck in the 1970s with little sense of how to move on. Despite rhetoric to the contrary, everything changed after 1969, except the country and ourselves. The United States watched its major manufacturing markets shrink, first finessed by Japan and Pacific Rim countries, then Europe, and now China and Brazil. Dr. Fisher shines a bright light into the shadows of our collective complacent minds, he argues, programmed to accept the status quo as normalcy. He sees people today as busy as ever, moving faster and faster, but in place not unlike the 1970s. Then the escape from anxiety was a psychedelic high anesthetized with some recreational drug; today it is the palliative of some electronic device. He asks the question: Has society changed and have we as well? And if not, why not? He suggests we are obsessed with the future, unable or unwilling to relinquish our toys to live meaningful lives in the present. The Information Age has exploded in our midst and we have lost our way. Dr. Fisher debunks the notion that science can save us from ourselves, and suggests we take a time out, and let sanity revisit us.
