Author Information

William Walker Ready Cash, born February 21, 1919, was a catcher for the Philadelphia Stars of the Negro Leagues from 1943 to 1950. He was named to the prestigious East-West All-Star Team in 1948 and 1949, and in 1946 he was selected to play with the Satchel Paige All-Stars, but a broken thumb forced him to bow out of the game. Bill's stellar career also included stints in Cuba, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Canada, and Venezuela. Enshrined in three local halls of fame, Bill earned his nickname Ready as a youngster because he was always ready to play ball. Bill was a 33rd-degree Prince Hall Mason and married to his late wife, Sadie, for sixty-three years. He died Sept. 12, 2011, three months before his book was published. He was ninety-two. Al Hunter Jr. spent twenty-eight years in the newspaper business -- the last seventeen with the Philadelphia Daily News -- as an award-winning reporter and jazz columnist, editor, and editorial writer. He was editorial consultant for legendary singer Dionne Warwick's autobiography My Life As I See It, written with David Freeman Wooley. Al resides in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and is a former president of the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists.
